A Victory of Two Innocent Lives Over Thalassemia

When it comes to the story of thalassemia survival, kids almost never made it. And why would they, at most times they are innocent and fragile that the anaemic symptoms can alone end their life fatally?
That is why it is so endearing to hear when he 4 year old Tarun Parayani finally won his war against the blood detrimental disease.
However, this is not merely a story of survival, it is also a story of heroism, where his sister Tamanna, came forward to donate her bone-marrow to save her little brother’s life. That is why, it is not the victory of one, but innocent lives.

Tamanna is barely 10 with a heart that would rival many soldiers on the front lines. To that end, we asked her how she came to know about the disease and why did she take such a heroic step. Her response was tear-jerking because, in her own words, she said one simple thing-
“I could not see the sadness in my father’s eyes”
Back when Tarun came into existence, he was soft and delicate. This way Tamanna finally had a buddy to play with. However, one day, the play time was over when Tarun was struck by a fever and the parent’s had to take him to the hospital.

What they found out that Tarun did not have any normal issue with him, for he was admitted to the hospital for three days. After the admittance period was over, the parents came back and Tamanna thought that everything was normal. It was then when she saw an uncontrollable cry from the mother. This cry turns into a conversation that worried the little sister to her very soul, for they were talking about the time Tarun had left to live.
That night Tamanna’s father went out with the kid and came back again, telling the wife that the blood has been transfused.

Now, you can imagine the lack of understanding a small girl like Tamanna would have. This lack of understanding got a lot more apparent when she couldn’t get a handle on why her brother was getting 3 blood transfusions a month.
Tamanna then says
“I did not understand anything. Then one day, someone in Akola told us that my brother can be fine! We went to the hospital and got my parents tested.”
Now, thalassemia is genetic and as both the parents were responsible for the predicament of Tarun, they were not able to do anything by themselves.

It was then that the Doctor called Tamanna and said to her that she could save her brother’s life.
“Once I heard that, I went to the hospital with mommy and papa! I went there because they were going to test me too”

Once the sister was tested, the doctor found out that she was a perfect match and hence, qualified to become the donor for her brother.

“They put something inside my back bone, they took a little of something and then gave me some medicine”

From this point, began a three-day ordeal for Tamanna, for she could not sleep. It was Bone marrow transplant that was taken from her and it was then transplanted into her brother.
“After this, The Doctor Uncle gave me some chocolate and a teddy bear”
Now some back story about Tarun himself, by the year 2017, he had been given blood transfusions about 117 times. It was at this point, that he learned about the entire procedure.

This process was not easy and definitely wasn’t cheap (about 19 Lakhs rupees). However, it is not the story of how a poor family got through, but a story of how the little ones won a battle that used to be one sided, but now can be cured through stem cell transplantation.
